A check was presented to Salt Lake County Mayor Carroon in the amount of $20,000 to be used at the Lions Barrier-Free Park on Tuesday, May 6. The money is a donation from Utah Lions clubs through the Utah Lions Foundation to enable handicapped kids to use the swimming pool and other facilities at the park at 1665 East Murray-Holladay Road.

Kids with all types of handicaps use the facilities at the Barrier-Free Park built by Lions donations, Salt Lake County and various private donations. Many blind people of all ages use the various facilities at the park.

Whitley and long-time Holladay Lion member Carl Hansen. Also on hand were several Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation staff and Lions officers.

Approximately 20 blind children were using the pool during their regular monthy outing as the presentation was made. Also in attendance were several kids from the Utah School for the Deaf & Blind accompanied by Draper Lions member Stephanie Rasmussen and other school personnel.

The Barrier-Free Park is the result of many hours of effort and many dollars in donations to make a dream come true. This was spearheaded by the Holladay Lions club some 20 years ago. Barrier-Free means the park has facilities that everyone can use, even those who are handicapped.
